There were three changes for Rangers as Dujon Sterling, Robin Propper and Mohamed Diomande came into the starting XI to replace James Tavernier, Leon Balogun and the injured Tom Lawrence.
Jack Butland wore the captain’s armband from the start, as he lined-up behind a back four of Dujon Sterling, John Souttar, Robin Propper and Jefte.
Mohamed Diomande came into the midfield alongside Connor Barron and Nico Raskin, while it was the same front three as Sunday’s semi-final with Nedim Bajrami and Vaclav Cerny in support of striker Cyriel Dessers.
With an impressive win in Malmo on the opening matchday of the league phase, tonight’s game was the second away fixture for Rangers in the new-look group round of the competition.
Diomande was the first to have an effort on goal for Rangers as the midfielder found space on the edge of the box to curl a strike towards the target but it was gathered by Kostas Tzolakis in the Olympiacos goal.
The home side looked threatening in the early stages, but Rangers were holding their own and almost got the breakthrough at another counter. Good footwork from Vaclav Cerny allowed him to find Nico Raskin who sent the ball into the path of Cyriel Dessers but there was just too much on it for the striker to take advantage.
Minutes later, Bajrami found Dessers with another nice ball forward and this time the striker beat the defence to run through on goal but was unable to send it beyond the goalkeeper as he blocked the right-footed shot.
At the other end, Costinha had a shot held by Butland before Ayoub El Kaabi sent a ball into the box in search of Chiquinho and his attempt took a ricochet but was able to be cleared by Rangers.
There was another fantastic opportunity for Clement’s men and it was a well-worked move as Dujon Sterling on the right-flank flicked the ball into the path of Cerny. He showed his skill working his way towards the byline, before cutting the ball back to Dessers, with Kostas Tzolakis standing strong to block the striker's low shot.
As the game reached the half-hour mark, Cerny released a powerful strike towards goal but Tzolakis got down to his left-hand post quickly to react and gather the ball, before Martins hit the side netting for the Greek side as both teams continued to search for the crucial opening goal.
Rangers made their first change of the evening early into the first half, as Neraysho Kasanwirjo was introduced at right-back in place of Dujon Sterling.
With 56 minutes played, it was Olympiacos who had the opening goal in this match through Ayoub El Kaabi.
A ball into the box by Christos Mouzakitis was flicked into the path of El Kaabi, and in a central position in the area he turned and fired a powerful shot high into the back of the net.
However the lead lasted less than 10 minutes, and it was a fantastic response from Rangers. Vaclav Cerny found Cyriel Dessers on the attack and the striker took a lovely touch beyond an Olympiacos defender before showing composure with a fine finish low into the bottom corner.
There was another chance for the Rangers number nine shortly after as he turned the defender to open space and get a shot away at goal but it was inches wide of the target.
It was a good spell for the Gers, and Nedim Bajrami was next to carve open an opportunity making ground down the left-flank before cutting into the box and getting a shot towards goal but it was gathered by the goalkeeper.
With five minutes of the game remaining, Clement made a triple change with James Tavernier, Ross McCausland and Hamza Igamane all coming on in place of Nedim Bajrami, Vaclav Cerny and Cyriel Dessers.
With four minutes added on, both teams were still searching for that winning goal, but neither could carve open a clear-cut opportunity as they shared the points in Athens.
